You’ve taken the Riding Academy course, signed the papers, and heard the satisfying rumble of your new Harley-Davidson® as you rolled off the lot. Now what?
At Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson®, we know the first 1,000 miles on a motorcycle are some of the most exciting—and the most important. Whether you're a brand-new rider or returning to two wheels after a break, those early miles set the tone for your long-term confidence, safety, and joy on the road.
Here’s how to make your first 1,000 miles as smooth, safe, and unforgettable as possible.

Get to Know Your Bike—On Your Terms
Every Harley-Davidson model has its own feel, and it takes time to become fully in sync with your bike. Even if you’ve trained on a similar model, riding your own motorcycle in the real world is a different experience. We recommend starting with shorter, local rides and gradually increasing your distance.
Stick to familiar roads at first, where you can focus on refining your throttle control, cornering, and braking without worrying about navigation or traffic patterns. As your comfort grows, start introducing new road conditions—highways, light rain, hills, etc.—to build experience in a controlled way.

Check Your Ergonomics & Comfort Early
That slight twinge in your shoulders after a 45-minute ride? Don’t ignore it. Small comfort issues can become major fatigue points over time. That’s why we encourage new riders to schedule a quick check-in with our team after your first couple of weeks.
We can help you make simple adjustments like repositioning handlebars, changing out grips, or installing a more supportive seat. Customizing your Harley for your body ensures you stay confident—and comfortable—on every mile ahead.

Follow the Break-In Period Guidelines
Your new Harley engine needs time to settle in. During those first 500 to 1,000 miles, follow your owner’s manual instructions carefully. Avoid aggressive starts and high-speed cruising right away. Instead, vary your speeds and keep the RPMs moderate so that the engine components wear evenly and properly.
Your first service appointment is also crucial. This check-up ensures that everything is torqued, oiled, and running as it should after your initial break-in. Schedule it with our certified service team around the 1,000-mile mark—or sooner if anything feels off.

Dress Like a Pro, Ride Like One Too
If you’re still borrowing gear or using entry-level protection, it’s time to upgrade. Investing in high-quality riding gear is one of the best ways to boost both confidence and safety.
At Thunder Mountain, our team can outfit you with DOT-approved helmets, all-season jackets, gloves, and boots that fit your style and riding conditions. We’ll help you build a kit that grows with you.
The First 1,000 Miles Are Just the Beginning
Your first few rides are filled with adrenaline, learning curves, and the kind of freedom you can only find behind handlebars. Take it slow, enjoy the ride, and lean on your local experts here at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson whenever you need support.
